Know the signs

A tourist trap is a place that charges more or offers less because it relies on visitors who will never return. Typical signs are touts outside, laminated picture menus in many languages, and prices far above what the area normally charges.

Eating well

  1. Walk two or three streets away from major sights before choosing a restaurant.
  2. Look for where locals eat, especially at lunch. Short menus often mean fresher food.
  3. Check prices before you sit down, including cover charges.
  4. Use maps with recent reviews, and check the dates.

Sights and tickets

  • Book official tickets online to avoid resellers and long queues.
  • Visit early or late when crowds are lower.
  • Pick fewer places and allow time to enjoy them.

Common scams

Be wary of unofficial taxis, friendship bracelets, 'closed today' stories and anyone who offers an unusually cheap deal. Use official taxi ranks or ride-hailing apps, and agree prices up front.

Don't overcorrect

Some famous places are famous for good reason. See them, but plan the timing, and balance them with quiet neighbourhoods.
