Nature returning

In several parts of Europe, protected areas, changed farming and reintroductions have helped wildlife recover. Visiting responsibly can support local economies that depend on healthy ecosystems.

Places and species

  • Southern Carpathians, Romania: European bison have been reintroduced, and brown bears and wolves live in the region. Choose local guides.
  • Danube Delta, Romania: Pelicans and hundreds of bird species.
  • Iberian Highlands, Spain: Vultures, wild horses and efforts to restore habitats. Iberian lynx recovery is happening in southern Spain.
  • Scotland: Beaver reintroductions in places like Knapdale, and red squirrel and wildcat conservation efforts.
  • Oostvaardersplassen and other Dutch reserves: Large grazing animals in managed wetlands. Check current rules.
  • Białowieża Forest: Ancient forest with European bison.

Wildlife-watching tips

  1. Hire local guides, who know where animals are and how to avoid disturbance.
  2. Be patient, and go early or late in the day.
  3. Keep your distance and avoid feeding wildlife.
  4. Bring binoculars and warm clothes.
