The problem

Some volunteering programmes are designed around volunteers' wishes, not communities' needs. Short-term volunteers can unintentionally cause harm, especially when working with children or animals.

Red flags

  • Orphanage volunteering. Experts advise against it. Many children in orphanages have families, and visitors can encourage unhealthy practices.
  • No skills needed for work that requires qualifications, such as teaching or building.
  • Animal contact such as cuddling wild animals.
  • Very short stays for roles that need continuity.
  • Vague information about the partner organisation and finances.

Good signs

  1. Requested by the community, with local staff in charge.
  2. Volunteer roles match skills, with training and supervision.
  3. Transparent finances.
  4. Child safeguarding policies and background checks.
  5. Long-term commitment.

Alternatives

Support community-run businesses, hire local guides and consider donating to reputable local organisations instead of travelling to work.

Research each organisation carefully.
