Ten mistakes

  1. Buying too late. Some cover, such as cancellation, starts only from the purchase date. Buy when you book.
  2. Not declaring medical conditions. Be honest, even for minor issues.
  3. Underinsuring. Check medical limits, especially for the US and other high-cost countries.
  4. Ignoring activities. Winter sports, diving and adventure activities often need extra cover.
  5. Leaving valuables unattended. Policies often exclude them.
  6. Not reading exclusions. Alcohol, strikes and certain destinations may be excluded.
  7. Relying on a card benefit without checking the terms.
  8. Forgetting to report losses quickly. Police reports and notices often have deadlines.
  9. Throwing away receipts. Keep documentation.
  10. Not carrying the emergency number. Save it on your phone and on paper.

Before you buy

Compare policies on cover, not only price. Check the cancellation policy and whether the insurer is regulated.

During the trip

Tell the insurer early if something goes wrong, especially for medical care.

This is general guidance. Read your policy for details.
