Not 'better', but different
It is tempting to say Asia is simply ahead of the West. It is more accurate to say several Asian cities invested heavily in specific areas, and those areas make life easier for visitors. Here are the ones you will notice.
Transport that runs on time
- Japan: Shinkansen trains are famously punctual, and city rail networks link neatly with buses. A Suica or Pasmo card (also available on phones) works on trains, buses and many shops.
- South Korea: Seoul's subway covers the metropolitan area, and a T-money card works on buses, subway and taxis. Signs are in English, Chinese and Japanese.
- Singapore: The MRT, buses and taxis work with contactless bank cards, so tourists often need no separate ticket.
- Hong Kong: The Octopus card is accepted on transport and in convenience stores.
Payments and connectivity
Mobile payment is huge in China (Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept many foreign cards) and in much of Southeast Asia. Japan remains cash-friendly, so carry some yen. Free Wi-Fi is widespread in Seoul and Singapore, but a local eSIM is easier than hunting for hotspots.
Services that save time
Expect station lockers, luggage forwarding services (Japan's takkyubin will send bags to your hotel or the airport) and efficient airports. In Singapore and Seoul, many tourist attractions offer online ticketing and queue-skipping.
Things to prepare
- Download maps and transport apps before you go: Google Maps works well in Japan and Singapore, Naver or KakaoMap is better in South Korea, and Baidu or Amap is better in mainland China.
- Check whether your bank card works abroad and set a travel notification.
- Carry a small amount of cash.
- Keep your phone charged. Almost everything runs on it.
Beyond the tech
The best part of this infrastructure is that it gives you time. Less time buying tickets means more time at the market, the temple or the ramen counter. Use the saved minutes wisely.
Transport apps and entry rules change often, so check current guidance for each destination before you travel.
