How listings work

The World Heritage Committee meets yearly to add cultural and natural sites of outstanding value to the World Heritage List. Over a thousand sites are listed worldwide.

How to find new additions

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre website lists new inscriptions by year and country. Many national tourism boards also publicise new sites. Because lists change, check the latest announcements instead of relying on older articles.

Planning a visit

  1. Check access. Some sites are remote, with limited transport.
  2. Book tickets and guided tours in advance if needed.
  3. Visit in shoulder season and early or late.
  4. Hire local guides, who add context and support the local economy.
  5. Combine nearby sites for a themed trip, such as medieval towns, ancient cities or national parks.

Visit responsibly

  • Follow rules on touching, climbing and photography.
  • Stay on paths and avoid damaging fragile areas.
  • Do not take souvenirs from sites.
  • Support conservation through entrance fees.

Beyond the list

Not every wonderful place is listed. Use UNESCO as one guide, and keep an eye on local gems.
