Setting expectations
Luxury castle hotels cost hundreds of pounds a night. But budget travellers can sleep in genuinely historic buildings if they choose well. Here are realistic options.
Castle hostels and youth hostels
- Burg Altena, Germany: The world's first youth hostel was founded in a castle in Altena in 1912, and the castle still has hostel accommodation. Check current availability.
- Hostels in historic buildings: Many European youth hostels occupy castles, convents and palaces, especially in Germany, Czech Republic and Ireland. Check the Hostelling International network and individual hostels.
- Castle apartments and lodges: Smaller castles often rent rooms or apartments at prices comparable to a mid-range hotel.
Monasteries and convents
Many monasteries offer simple rooms for visitors. They are usually peaceful, inexpensive and in beautiful locations, though there may be curfews or house rules.
Other budget ideas
- Paradores and pousadas (Spain and Portugal): State-run historic hotels. Prices vary, but off-season rates can be good value.
- Heritage guesthouses in Eastern Europe: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania have manor-house and castle guesthouses at moderate prices.
- Volunteer or work-exchange programmes: Some historic properties accept volunteers in exchange for accommodation. Check reviews and agreements carefully.
Tips for finding deals
- Travel in shoulder season and midweek.
- Book directly with the property, and compare prices on booking sites.
- Read recent reviews about heating, noise and bathrooms. Old buildings can be cold and quirky.
- Check the room type: 'castle view' is not the same as 'in the castle'.
Prices and policies change, so check the property's own website.
